Why pine needles are different
Needles are thin enough to slip through coarse screens and long enough to bridge downspout openings. Once a mat forms, the gutter fills and overflows even though it may look only half full from the ground.
What guards do

They still need care
No guard is maintenance-free. Debris can collect on top, and fine material can still settle over time. Plan on a periodic check and rinse, and pair guards with correctly sloped, properly sized gutters so the system flushes itself.
